The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and is the recognised national statistical institute for the UK. It is responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. It also conducts the census in England and Wales every ten years. The ONS plays a leading role in national and international good practice in the production of official statistics. It is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority and although they are separate, they are still closely related.

  • UK population ages 16-59 who were victims of domestic abuse in past year, by victim personal characteristics, 2012/13 survey

No time series. It was last modified on 6 Feb 2015 at 02:57.

    • Units: Percents and thousands
    • Dimensions:
    • Description:

Shows percent of adult population who were victims of domestic abuse once or more in the 12 months prior to the survey. The unweighted base shows the estimated number of persons who were victims of any type of domestic abuse. An empty cell indicates a sample size too small for making estimates.

Data are from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), a face-to-face survey in which people resident in households in England and Wales are asked about their experiences of crime in the 12 months prior to the interview.
In the year ending March 2013, the CSEW had achieved a nationally representative sample of 35,169 adults and 2,879 children with response rates of 75% and 67% respectively. The survey is weighted to adjust for possible non-response bias and to ensure the sample reflects the profile of the general population. Being based on a sample survey, CSEW estimates are subject to a margin of error. Unless stated otherwise, all changes in CSEW estimates described in the main text are statistically significant at the 95 per cent level.
The data shown here are from Reference Table 4.9 associated with a report titled “Focus on Violent
Crime and Sexual Offences 2012/13.” The full text of that report is available in this ProQuest service [DOCUMENT LINK UK-044.pdf].

Data are from EMP06 dataset and are shown for the top 60 countries. Data are shown in 000s. Totals may not sum due to rounding,
Estimates are based on the Annual Population Survey (APS) which is the Labour Force Survey (LFS) plus various sample boosts. APS and LFS data has now been grossed to 2010-based population estimates and projections. Tables published from the year ending December 2011 have been weighted using these estimates. Tables published prior to this were weighted using the 2008 and 2006-based estimates and projections and have not been revised. Analysis shows that there is no discernible discontinuity in these tables.

    • Description:

The main population base for outputs from the 2011 Census is the usual resident population as at census day (27 March 2011).
Although the population base for enumeration included non-UK short-term residents, these are not included in the main outputs from the
2011 Census, but are analysed separately. All outputs, unless specified, are produced using only usual residents of the UK.
For 2011 Census purposes, a usual resident of the UK is anyone who, on census day, was in the UK and had stayed or intended to
stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside
the UK for less than 12 months. Ethnic group classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background.
