A Tale of Two Internets
The year 2002 was obviously the year of the internet in Scandinavia. We see a big jump in internet adoption in every Scandinavian country that year. The biggest jump of all was in Norway where the number of internet users as a percentage of the total population jumped from 29% to 72% in a single year according to the data from the UN's International Telecommunications Unit.
At the same time the internet adoption in the easternmost countries in Europe nowhere exceeded 10%. But it seems that their time has come. The adoption rates have been growing substantially in the last few years are similar now (latest numbers are from 2009) to what they were in Scandinavia in the year 2000. Who knows, maybe their big jump comes in a year or two?
