Iraq, Oil and the EU
The graph below shows monthly imports of oil from Iraq to the European Union, linked to some major events in the history of the conflict in the Persian gulf.
A few things to notice:
- The economic sanctions that stopped oil imports from August 1990 until the oil-for-food programme starts in 1996.
- Under the oil-for-food programme, oil imports from Iraq almost reached its previous levels, but remain significantly lower ever since the invation of Iraq in 2003.
- The United Kingdom has not imported any oil from Iraq since the economic sanctions were put in place in 1990.
So, who's Europe's largest buyer of Iraqi oil? The answer is Italy. For the past few years, Italy has imported about half of the oil imported from Iraq to the European Union:
